Surfers

Surfers capture the very essence of freedom. They are pure harmony between the human being and the sea. In every wave they find an instant of true connection. It is like a dance with the ocean.

This series was born from my fascination with the Atlantic and with the surf culture of Spain and Portugal. I am not after a sporting portrait of the surfer, but something deeper: for me, that instant of balance between the body and the wave is a form of meditation in motion.

I work with a quick, almost photographic gesture, setting the force of the water against the lightness of the human figure suspended above it. The surfer is only an accent, a presence that lends scale and humanity to the scene; the true protagonist is always the sea, with its force, its light and its silence.
