Surfers

Video excerpt: Surfers – Aurora Vigil-Escalera Gallery (2021)

In December 2021, the Aurora Vigil-Escalera gallery in Gijón hosted the solo exhibition Surfers, an individual project comprising 17 works in which Javier Torices articulated a visual dialogue around the figure of surfers and their intimate relationship with the ocean.

In this body of work, the incorporation of the human element does not detract from the prominence of the sea; on the contrary, the figure of the surfer acts as a catalyst for scale and emotion, symbolizing the pursuit of freedom, adventurous instinct, and a respectful integration with untamed nature. Alongside the constant study of light, wave volume, and water density, the figures represented embody that physical and mental connection with the sea: the serene wait, the reading of the horizon, and immersion in a living force in constant motion.
